Aston Villa's new wage restrictions are in danger of pricing them out of a move for Bosman striker Andy Johnson.
MirrorSport revealed on March 14 Villa boss Alex McLeish is chasing Fulham's ex-England forward Johnson, who has 11 goals this term.
McLeish has been told to rebuild Villa this summer using mainly free signings.
He fancies Johnson but Villa owner Randy Lerner has decreed all new recruits must not earn more than £40,000-a-week.
McLeish has secured the signature of Bosman midfielder Brett Holman already.
But Villa scouts are also out searching for a striker, a holding midfielder and a new left-back, placing Stephen Warnock's future into doubt.
