Robert Snodgrass is a summer target for Cardiff boss Malky Mackay.
Mackay is planning an end-of-season swoop for the Leeds winger, who has had an £8million valuation slapped on him by United.
And the Bluebirds chief will move for the Scotland international, who cost £150,000 from Livingston, no matter which division beaten Carling Cup finalists are in next season.
City are currently in the Championship play-off places, and are hoping to make it third-time lucky in their bid to reach the Premier League after missing out in the play-offs in each of the last two seasons.
Snodgrass has scored 39 goals in 176 games and has been made captain by new United boss Neil Warnock.
