Alan Pardew has made a personal check on Swiss ace Xherdan Shaqiri.
The Newcastle boss flew to Switzerland to check out their game with Bulgaria in Basel on Tuesday night.
He also watched long-term target Eren Derdiyok in the hope he will be backed with funds in January.
Shaqiri caught the eye with a hattrick. Derdiyok, 23, has grabbed 18 goals in 65 matches for Bayer Leverkusen.
Pardew today be asked about his frustrations over Newcastle's failure to sign a striker last week.
He had hinted before the transfer deadline that his squad would be weaker than last May unless he was given more ammunition up front.
Pardew has been the subject of a run of betting that he will be the next top flight boss to leave his job, but he won't quit.
