Birmingham City boss Chris Hughton is stepping up his bid to sign Newcastle United’s Nile Ranger after being hit by a striker crisis.
Hughton has lost strikers Cameron Jerome, Marlon King and Nikola Zigic for the start of the season.
Jerome has an ankle problem, King is struggling with a knee injury and Zigic needs surgery for a persistent hip and groin problem.
That has left Hughton with just three strikers, new signing Adam Rooney and rookies Akwasi Asante and Jake Jervis to call on.
Newcastle are ready to offload Ranger and Hughton is keen to pounce on his old club.
Hughton gave Ranger his debut when he was in charge at St James’ Park.
