Sochaux's Modibo Maiga hopes to make a £5million switch to Newcastle.
The Mali striker is now in dispute with his French club after learning of the Geordies’ interest.
Maiga missed their weekend game against Caen, amid claims he boycotted the match to force a transfer.
On Monday, the 23-year-old said: “The English Premier League is a dream. It suits me. I want to leave.”
Toon also hope to sign left-back Erik Pieters from PSV Eindhoven before next weekend's derby clash with Sunderland.
