Real Madrid have reached an initial agreement with Benfica for the transfer of wing-back Fabio Coentrao to the Bernabeu for 30million euros, according to the Portuguese club.
Benfica announced the deal in a statement to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMCM), with the switch dependant on Coentrao passing his medical and agreeing personal terms with Madrid.
The news will come as a blow to Chelsea, who were also interested in the defender.
If the transfer goes through, Coentrao will becoming Madrid's fifth signing of the summer following on from Turkey international duo Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop, Espanyol winger Jose Maria Callejon and Frenchman Raphael Varane.
The Benfica statement read: "Benfica announces that it has reached an initial agreement with Real Madrid for the permanent transfer of the player Fabio Coentrao for the value of 30million euros.
"We also announce that the transfer will be formalised once the player completes the medical tests which he will undertake, with the consent of Benfica, and agreement of the contract between the player and Real Madrid."
Coentrao is reportedly in the Spanish capital undergoing the medical now.
The deal could also see Madrid's Argentinian central defender Ezequiel Garay move to Portugal in part exchange.
