Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is heading the race to sign Scotland Under-21 Gregg Wylde.
McLeish has made contact with Wylde’s camp since he became a free agent by quitting crisis club Rangers and the Premier League will allow him to come to England.
The winger has a choice of a staggering 14 clubs after ending his contract with the troubled Glasgow giants, but Villa – who are looking for bargains – hope to agree terms quickly.
Bolton boss Owen Coyle, who bid £700,000 for Wylde in the summer, is also keen but has taken Arsenal left-winger Ryo Miyachi on loan so his need is not as pressing.
Wylde is expected to meet most of the interested clubs in a whirlwind round of talks and could be offered better first-team chances in the Championship.
Southampton, Blackpool and Bristol City are also keen.
Special dispensation meaning that Wylde can join any club and play if he is signed by the end of the month.
