Matthew Upson is set to be offered an escape from his torment at Stoke by promotion-bound Southampton.
Saints stand top of the Championship, and boss Nigel Adkins will target the Potters centre-back whether his side are promoted or not.
Upson, 32, has struggled for first-team football since joining last summer from relegated West Ham.
The former England international has only made four starts this year for Stoke and is prepared to quit at the end of the season.
Adkins is keen to offer Upson a fresh start at St. Mary's, and Southampton could get him for around £500,000.
