West Brom are taking USA centre-half Tim Ream on trial from the New York Red Bulls.
Ream, 24, will join the Baggies next month, and if he impresses a loan deal with a view to a permanent move could be agreed.
Albion face competition from Bolton, with Ream also due to spend a spell training at the Reebok.
West Brom boss Roy Hodgson is keen to strengthen his defensive options and Manchester City’s Nedum Onuoha is also a loan target.
Bolton are looking at defenders with Gary Cahill on Chelsea and Spurs’ radars.
